The passage of time is a bit sneaky.
We tend to see it most in young children with how fast they grow and change. We see it again in our aging parents. And, it becomes the main focus of those who are sick — whose time is consumed with trying to get well.
The rest of us land somewhere in the middle, drifting through a no man’s land under the illusion that there’s still plenty of time left.
I heard a powerful reframe of time from Jesse Itzler, serial entrepreneur, author and speaker, in conversation with Rich Roll on his podcast (paraphrased)
Jesse asked: How often do you see your parents?
Rich answered: Twice a year.
Jesse replied: If your parents live for five more years, you don’t have five more years with them. You have ten more times with them.
Think of time not in years, but in moments. That simple math instantly changes how intentional we are with how we spend our days.
Another friend, Ben Nemtin, another New York Times bestselling author and motivational speaker, asks the question, “What do you want to do before you die?” Through his Bucket List Journal, he encourages us to reach for our wildest dreams in the present moment.
All around me, I’ve noticed that the brightest lights in my life, the ones who are both accomplished and joyful — treat time like their most precious commodity.
Restaurateur Janet Zuccarini shared with me in our interview last week that she considers time to be a rare currency. I couldn’t agree more.
All of these reframes and questions are more about life than death. And they’re designed to help us extract the most meaning and joy from the time we have.
